The video excerpts below have been selected according to the variety of approaches to musical movement that they represent. In order to make them as relevant as possible to the study of conducting, particular emphasis was placed on upper body movement. Watching these videos with the sound on will provide an immediate understanding of the connection between music and movement as realized by the choreographers and performers. However, watching them without sound first offers conductors the opportunity to imagine the types of sounds that might be associated with the choreography. As with conducting, movements may occasionally seem incongruous with the sounds they correspond to. These moments offer a rich opportunity to consider why such decisions have been made, whether for artistic, narrative, and/or pragmatic reasons.
